Interview with Nikola Ilchev: Why Cross-Border eCommerce Is the Balkans’ Next Growth Engine

The Balkan eCommerce Summit has evolved into a strategic platform for regional growth, reflecting the accelerating maturity of Southeast Europe’s digital commerce ecosystem. Beyond its role as a large-scale industry event, the Summit functions as a connector between markets, enabling founders, service providers, and brands to translate cross-border ambition into structured expansion strategies. In this interview, Nikola Ilchev, founder of the Balkan eCommerce Summit, outlines the business logic behind building a regional eCommerce infrastructure, explains why cross-border commerce has become a primary growth lever for companies in the Balkans, and shares how the 2026 edition is positioned to support scalable, market-driven expansion across Europe.

Balkan eCommerce Summit 2026

Nikola, you’ve been building events in the eCommerce space for years, with Balkan eCommerce Summit growing significantly since 2023, what personally drives you, and when did you realize the region needed its own dedicated eCommerce summit?

Nikola: The roots of the Summit go back to 2016, when we organized our first cross-border event, Sell Successfully in Romania. It was small, around 60 attendees from Bulgaria and just a handful of Romanian experts sharing practical insights about their market.

A month later, I personally called every attendee to see if the event had actually helped them. To my surprise, over 40 of them were already taking their first steps into the Romanian market, applying the advice they’d heard. That was the moment I realized the region needed a dedicated international platform, one that helps local eCommerce players expand beyond their borders.

It took time to build our reputation and find the right format, but those early lessons shaped the Summit’s foundation. Its growth since then comes from two directions: internally, our commitment to creating real value and community; and externally,  the region’s rapid rise in online sales and ongoing digital transformation, which continues to fuel momentum every year.

In one line, what’s the idea behind “Your Next Market” as the theme for Balkan eCommerce Summit 2026?

Nikola: The idea behind “Your Next Market” comes from countless conversations I have with eCommerce founders, service providers, and event organizers across the region. Cross-border commerce keeps coming up,  it’s becoming the main growth driver for many businesses, not just in the Balkans but globally.

We wanted a theme that instantly connects with that ambition. Simple, direct, and memorable. “Your Next Market” says exactly what we stand for: helping businesses find and conquer their next opportunity across borders.

Which three outcomes should an attendee expect to leave with after two days at Balkan eCommerce Summit 2026?

Nikola: After two days at BES 2026, every attendee should leave with a clear understanding of the latest trends in eCommerce, from automation and marketing to SEO and GEO and how they apply across different Balkan markets. A strong network of service providers and partners who can help them take their business to the next level. And last but not least fresh ideas for new products, strategies, and business growth that they can put into action right away.

How do you select international experts to ensure actionable insights rather than high-level theory?

Nikola: We’re very selective about who steps on our stage. Every speaker is either personally invited by our team for their proven expertise and hands-on experience, or chosen through an application process that requires clear proof of results and real-world knowledge. We also look for speakers who can deliver their message in an engaging and inspiring way, because great content only matters if it truly connects with the audience.

A great example of this approach are the sessions where we invite successful eCommerce brand owners with solid backgrounds and proven results. Most of the time, they share the stage with a service provider or partner who helped them achieve those results  giving the audience a complete, practical perspective from both sides.

For the One-to-One Meeting Zone, how will you balance volume with relevance (matching rules, scheduling, and reducing no-shows)?

Nikola: That’s actually quite simple. We let the balance happen naturally through the quality of attendees we bring. When you gather the right people in one place, serious professionals who value their time, no-shows are rare, because everyone understands the opportunity he has.

We’re not worried about mismatches either. Everyone attending is in the eCommerce space, so even if a meeting isn’t a perfect fit, there’s always value in the conversation. The process is managed through our event app, which handles scheduling and ensures that the number of meetings matches the available capacity in the zone. And if we see higher demand,  we’ll simply expand it.

How should first-time attendees from Western Europe prepare for Balkan eCommerce Summit 2026, what should they expect about business culture and networking style in the Balkans?

Nikola: They should expect intense but warm and friendly networking.

I recommend they prepare in advance by reviewing the event’s partner list and identifying the types of companies they want to meet. They should come ready to exchange plenty of business cards and contacts, conversations happen quickly and openly, with people from all across the region and beyond. What makes it special is the atmosphere: business on the Balkans is personal, energetic, and built on trust. So while the networking is intense, it’s also genuine and welcoming, very much in the spirit of the region.

Tell us about your Partner Promotion Kit, what specific tools and strategies does it provide to help sponsors and exhibitors effectively engage their networks?

Nikola: Our “Event preparation guidelines” book is something my team created to help every event partner maximize their presence and get the most out of their participation.

It’s a practical guide covering what to do before, during, and after the event.
Before the event, it outlines how to communicate across all channels and how to prepare your appearance. During the event, it provides tips on video and photo content, how to engage with attendees, and how to approach potential clients effectively. After the event, it includes proven follow-up strategies, suggested timelines, and ideas for post-event offers.

Our goal is simple: for the Summit to be successful, every single exhibitor, partner, and attendee needs to succeed in their presence there.

How do Brand Ambassadors help build and strengthen the Balkan eCommerce Summit 2026 community?

Nikola: Our Brand Ambassadors are one of our strongest communication assets.

They are respected professionals from fields like digital marketing, eCommerce, logistics, content creation, and the startup ecosystem. Their solid reputation gives credibility to our brand, and their authentic communication about the Summit naturally draws attention and trust toward the Balkan eCommerce Summit.

They’re truly a treasure for us and we treat them with genuine respect and appreciation. Personally, I feel very grateful to be surrounded by such inspiring people.

The famous Balkan Party has become iconic, can you tease any surprises planned for this year?

Nikola: I can share that the party will be a bigger and better version of what we’ve offered so far. Just like every other aspect of the Balkan eCommerce Summit this year.

It will combine everything people have enjoyed the most from previous editions with a few new elements we’re keeping as a surprise for now. Expect the same incredible energy, but taken to the next level.
